Infinite Grace

By Brad L Hodges ©

Marvelous grace of our loving Lord,
Grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt!
Yonder on Calvary’s mount outpoured,
There where the blood of the Lamb was spilled.

Grace, grace, God’s grace,
Grace that will pardon and cleanse within;
Grace, grace, God’s grace,
Grace that is greater than all our sin!

Sin and despair, like the sea waves cold,
Threaten the soul with infinite loss;
Grace that is greater, yes, grace untold,
Points to the refuge, the mighty cross.
Dark is the stain that we cannot hide;
What can we do to wash it away?
Look! There is flowing a crimson tide,
Brighter than snow you may be today.
Marvelous, infinite, matchless grace,
Freely bestowed on all who believe!
You that are longing to see His face,
Will you this moment His grace receive?
(Grace Greater than Our Sin – hymn by Julia H. Johnson, pub. 1911)

Grace is a concept I have been learning about and grappling with, but God’s ways and thoughts are not our ways;

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD. Isaiah 55:8

So how can mere mortals expect to understand why God gave us His gift of grace?

Dictionary.com attempts to define ‘grace’ as applied to “theology” in a predictably, yet paltry manner;

8. Theology.
a. the freely given, unmerited favor and love of God.
b. the influence or spirit of God operating in humans to regenerate or strengthen them.
c. a virtue or excellence of divine origin: the Christian graces.
d. Also called state of grace. the condition of being in God’s favor or one of the elect.

But grace cannot be truly defined, especially by humans. It just is. Humanity is constantly attempting to analyze and question the motives of God. We call it ‘human nature,’ and that is exactly what it is; ‘human,’ and as in Isaiah 55:8, how can humans possibly comprehend the ways and thoughts of the Almighty God?

How can anyone assimilate why the God of the universe would send His own son to die for the sins of broken humanity. The grace of God needs to be accepted unconditionally, no matter how difficult the concept is to comprehend, in order to move forward in ones earthly journey with God. Questioning grace is like questioning why an infant needs her mother. The nourishment is there for the taking simply because of the need.

Grace is given out of necessity for the understandable iniquity of mankind. Who can not look around our world today and not clearly see that iniquity? Grace was created by God to dissolve the demarcation between iniquity and eternity.

Without grace there is no eternity with God. It’s that simple. One does not need to understand grace to get to eternity. It is given by God freely as the bridge to reconcile our iniquities with His immeasurable love.

If one accepts in their heart that Jesus died for their sins and asks Him to be The Lord of their lives, grace is automatically the benefaction.

Once the gift of grace is given and received it is infinite.

Infinite Grace is absolute love from God.

Acknowledge it by walking in the steps of Jesus.
