Light Source

By Brad L Hodges

1 John 1: 5-7
5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park, in Carlsbad, New Mexico, offered the “Rock of Ages Historic Lantern Tours” in December of 2012. Rangers presented a special two hour lantern tour of the Big Room at Carlsbad Caverns. The annual event takes visitors back in time where they will meet some of the men and women who helped weave the historic fabric of this spectacular National Park. These adventurous explorers, scientists and rangers will make their stories come to life while visitors enjoy the cave, lit only by candle lanterns. The tour concludes with a re-creation of the Rock of Ages Ceremony which was regularly conducted in the Big Room during the 1930’s and 40’s. During this portion of the tour, visitors will experience a “black out.” Keeping with the tradition of this tour, once immersed in total darkness, a voice will fill the cavern, singing the hymn “The Rock of Ages.”Carlsbad Caverns had a special treat in store for visitors that year by highlighting local talent. The voice in the darkness was a singer from the Carlsbad area (Source: National Park Service http://www.nps.gov/cave/planyourvisit/event-details.htm?eventID=664701-452862).

If you have ever been immersed in total and complete darkness you know it can not only be a very frightening experience, but beyond surreal. You literally cannot even see your hands in front of your face!

Can you imagine standing stationary in plenary darkness as described at Carlsbad Caverns, feeling and ‘seeing’ nothing but an inky black void and voluminous emptiness then hearing the words of this old hymn ring out of the darkness?:

Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
let me hide myself in thee;
let the water and the blood,
from thy wounded side which flowed,
be of sin the double cure;
save from wrath and make me pure.

Not the labors of my hands
can fulfill thy law’s commands;
could my zeal no respite know,
could my tears forever flow,
all for sin could not atone;
thou must save, and thou alone.

Nothing in my hand I bring,
simply to the cross I cling;
naked, come to thee for dress;
helpless, look to thee for grace;
foul, I to the fountain fly;
wash me, Savior, or I die.

While I draw this fleeting breath,
when mine eyes shall close in death,
when I soar to worlds unknown,
see thee on thy judgment throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
let me hide myself in thee.

As constituent’s of broken humanity, we walk in total darkness, void of the fellowship of God. We have no place to hide and are stumbling blindly through life without a lantern to light the way for the essence that is our soul, the inner being.

The good news is God has provided us that lantern to illuminate our way with the blinding light of the glory of Jesus Christ. Through Christ we can find our way out of the darkness, for God is light and in Him we can “soar to worlds unknown” if we accept the light of Jesus by claiming His offer of eternal life through Him.
