Seize The Day

By Brad L Hodges

Deuteronomy 10:12-13 (NIV)
12 And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, 13 and to observe the Lord’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good?

We never know what a new day will bring. Humans are not sorcerers or magicians nor do we have a crystal ball in which we can gaze into and know the future of our day or even the next moment for that matter.

Only God has that power.

I’ve always loved this quote;

“Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift of God, which is why we call it the present.”
― Bil Keane

On the cynical side we could wake up to a new day, get ready to go to work, school or shopping, head out on the road, and be killed in an automobile accident. So many have lamented the fact they never said goodbye to a loved one or had an argument the last time they saw them and never got the chance again to make up for it.

The present, right here and now, is a gift from God.

For the believer in the risen Savior, Jesus Christ, each new day takes on a different meaning and the scope of it is expanded exponentially as a result.

First and foremost the true believer knows that if they love The Lord and serve him with all their heart and with all their soul that each day we are presented here on earth is for our own good and for the glory of God. It is an opportunity to present ourselves as ambassadors for Christ and reflect Him in all we do so others may have the chance to get to know Him as we do.

Should we not be given a new day the prize is even greater because we will be spending eternity with Him. It gives new meaning to the present because it always stands on the threshold of eternity.

God gives us his commands to keep in our hearts and his commands are never a burden to those who love him;

Loving God means keeping his commandments, and his commandments are not burdensome. 1 John 5:3 (NLT).

Again, with the love of God in our hearts, each day is for our own good and the good of others as long as we share that love with everyone we come into contact with simply by the way we reflect that love. If others see the love of a God in our hearts and inquire about the difference in us, it may present the opportunity to provide them the assurance of eternity should they not be presented with a new day.

Seize the day, for the work of The Lord is before you.
