Soul Healthy Portion

Lamentations 3:22-26
22 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed,
for his compassions never fail.
23 They are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
24 I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion;
therefore I will wait for him.”
25 The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him,
to the one who seeks him;
26 it is good to wait quietly
for the salvation of the Lord.

According to Beth Hoffman of “Forbes,” the average American makes terrible choices while shopping for groceries. The U.S. Department of Agriculture released a report in 2013 noting that Americans tend to overspend on fats, refined grains and sugary foods while under-spending on vegetables, fruits and whole grains. This trend of imbalanced grocery shopping highlights how the average American brings greater quantities of unhealthy convenience foods into his or her home for consumption (Source: Why the Average American Does Not Consume a Healthy Diet by Alissa Fleck, Demand Media).

American’s don’t make any better choices when it comes to their souls. While 80% of Americans say they are Christian, 45% call themselves «Born Again Christians» according to Barna Group, Ventura, California, USA. Forty-Five percent of Americans say they have a personal commitment to Jesus Christ, have confessed their sins and accepted Christ as Savior according to The Barna Group.

According to the above statistics 55% of American’s are not getting their lifetime portion of salvation. As of 2012 the estimated population of the United States was 313.9 million. Keeping with the 55% figure of those who have not accepted Christ as their personal savior, 172.65 million people in America will starve for eternity.

It is alarming that this many people will be consumed by Satan rather than be absorbed with the Holy Spirit unless they find Christ.

If people spent as much time seeking their portion of The Lord as they do fast food, unhealthy grocery shopping and diets and gym memberships to overcome their poor eating choices, American’s would be full of the Holy Spirit.

Why don’t people feed their souls as much as they feed their stomachs?

It is because they are being controlled by human desires rather than Godly desires. The same human desires that steer folks to overeat at fast food restaurants and make poor choices in grocery stores causes them to reject feeding their souls. Human desires revolve around ‘self’ and pleasing self is unfortunately a priority in America. People do not view feeding the soul as self gratifying in the same way they view feeding their stomachs or other desires of the flesh like wealth or accumulating “stuff.”

American’s seek ‘fast’ food because they are too impatient or too busy to wait for a good, healthy, home cooked meal. They make the fast, easy choices in grocery stores because they are too assiduous or too impetuous to read the labels to ensure they are purchasing healthy choices.

The old saying; “The best things in life are worth waiting for” applies to waiting for a slow cooked, healthy homemade meal for sure.

The best things in eternity are worth seeking out in the source of nourishment for the soul; God’s Word, the Bible.

The Bible contains all the necessary recipes and nourishment to get a soul healthy portion that will sustain our inner being like nothing found in a fast food restaurant or grocery store.

When we eat fast food or items from the grocery store we will soon be hungry again. When we seek food for our soul The Lord rewards those “whose hope is in him” by filling them with the food of the spirit:

Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty (John 6:35).

If we know someone whose soul is starving it is our obligation to lead them to a soul healthy portion that will feed them for eternity. Give them the “bread of life” by telling them the good news of Jesus Christ and provide them the recipe book of the Bible so they can feed on the living Word of God forever.
