Pets From Heaven

We love our pets don’t we?

A report from the Labor Department shows that while Americans cut back in some types of disposable spending during the nation’s financial crisis, spending on pets held steady and has begun to pick up again.

The report shows that Americans spent over $61 billion on their pets in 2011, with the average household spending just over $500 on their pets during the year. That’s more than the average household spent on alcohol, men’s clothing, or landline telephones.*

I personally was blessed in October of 2013, with the addition to my family of one, of a little black kitten with a tiny white badge on his chest I named Micah. Micah filled the lonely space in my life with joy, comfort, his nearly boundless energy, tiny mew and frequent purring.

Pets bring out in us a deep desire to cherish, protect, and love something less preeminent than ourselves. They are the great equalizer, bridging the superior species of mankind with God’s other exemplary creations.

All God’s creations are significant and He has given us the awesome responsibility of being the stewards of his creation:

Psalm 8:3-8 (NIV)
3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
4 what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?
5 You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor.
6 You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet:
7 all flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild,
8 the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas.
9 Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

The Bible has much to say about these creatures over which we have been given responsibility for.

We are judged by how we care for them:

Proverbs 12:10 (NIV)
10 The righteous care for the needs of their animals, but the kindest acts of the wicked are cruel.

God cares what happens to them:

Luke 12:6 (NIV)
6 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God.

Psalm 36: (NIV)
6 Your righteousness is like the highest mountains, your justice like the great deep. You, Lord, preserve both people and animals.

Matthew 6:26 (NIV)
26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?

They may even have a place in eternity with us:

Ecclesiastes 3:18-21 (NIV)
18 I also said to myself, “As for humans, God tests them so that they may see that they are like the animals. 19 Surely the fate of human beings is like that of the animals; the same fate awaits them both: As one dies, so dies the other. All have the same breath; humans have no advantage over animals. Everything is meaningless. 20 All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return. 21 Who knows if the human spirit rises upward and if the spirit of the animal goes down into the earth?”

God uses them to guide and teach us:

Job 12:7 (NIV)
7 “But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you;

Proverbs 6:6-8 (NIV)
6 Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise!
7 It has no commander, no overseer or ruler,
8 yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.

God has given us our pets:

James 3:7 (NIV)
7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind,

Yes, our pets are from heaven and we are blessed by their presence in our lives. God blesses those who abide in Him and our pets can be as much a blessing in our lives as any other of the great blessings our mighty God bestows upon us.
