The Value Of One

There is a truck advertisement, that has aired on television in the past, I just love. A rancher is driving around his spread in a terrible rain storm, in his truck of course, checking for broken fences. Rain is coming down in sheets as he drives and the rancher soon discovers that one of his calves has escaped through a broken fence and wandered off and become lost in the deluge. Leaving the rest of the herd the rancher sets off determined to find his lost calf.

The narrator tells us that the rancher has the heart and the truck it takes, to search for the lost calf for as long as it takes, to find him, and his truck will take the rancher through anything to do so as he passes a utility team fixing a downed power line and getting drenched. They wave at the rancher as he plunges his powerful truck through a flooded river and plows along the muddy road searching for his lost calf.

He soon finds the poor little calf after parking the truck and crossing a bridge, wide-eyed, scared and soaked through its hide, it appears. The powerful rancher scoops the calf up in his arms and heads back across the bridge carrying it as the rain continues to pound them. We then cut to the man driving his truck back to his ranch, calf safely retrieved and no doubt rejoicing for having found him.

The advertisement, although unintended I’m certain, powerfully illustrates the parable Jesus told about the lost sheep. Although save for swapping lost calf for lost sheep, the parallel is remarkable.

God cares deeply for every single one of His children who have wandered from the herd and become lost in the sins of the world. So much so that heaven itself rejoices when that one single person finds eternal salvation in Jesus Christ.

If you are lost and separated from the infinite love of God, know that you have great value as just one individual among all the people in the world. Jesus died on the cross for your sin and is searching the broken fences of humanity looking to bring you home to eternal life.

Father we know you love all of your children and have rejoiced in heaven when each of us has been found by your son Jesus Christ. We pray that every single soul who is still lost and wandering around in the sins and disparagement of the world will be found by Him, accept Him as their personal savior, and be brought safely home for all eternity. Amen

Luke 15:3-7
3 Then Jesus told them this parable: 4 “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? 5 And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders 6 and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ 7 I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.
