Answering Machine

By Brad L Hodges

“Hello, epicenter of the Universe, God speaking. If you leave your name, number, and prayer after the tone, I will call you back as soon as I can. Please note that I answer all prayers, but sometimes the answer is NO. Bless you, my child, and have a nice day.” (GoodQuotes.com -‘Answering Machine’)

Psalm 4:1
1 Answer me when I call to you, my righteous God.
Give me relief from my distress; have mercy on me and hear my prayer.

I had been having some relentless winds where I live here in New Mexico for the past week. While I have never been a big fan of obnoxious wind at any time of the year or in any situation, it is especially miserable in winter when it is the primary culprit in what is known as the “wind chill factor.” Aptly named, the wind chill factor can chill you to your very bones it seems.

Added to the wind irk, I had been in the middle of having a new home constructed and I knew on this particular day that my contractor was coming out to begin moving some substantial amounts of dirt he had dug up and moved aside when digging out the area for the foundation of my new home, back around it, now that it was nearly complete. High wind plus very loose dirt was a mini 1930’s Dust Bowl II in the making, in my mind.

So I began praying and pleading, more pleading than prayer, to the God of The Universe admonishing him in no uncertain terms to please, please, PLEASE, give this poor human being a break and stop the miserable wind at least for this one day so we could get this near 6 month project finally finished in peace so close to the finish line.

The wind did not subside. Quite the opposite, it got worse and worse. More pleading, even less prayer.

“God why would you do this to me?, I wailed. We are so close and it is going to be miserable for these construction guys to do their job in this horrific wind! P-L-L-E-E-E-ASE make it stop. I know all you have to do is wink and it will be still,” I continued, figuring naturally at that very moment in time and space I actually WAS the epicenter of the universe.

The construction guys arrived, the wind continued at high levels hurling dust everywhere all day. While inconvenient and bothersome they got the job done, and quite well I might add. I had stopped praying and sulked around for awhile before sheepishly acknowledging God does answer all prayer, but sometimes the answer is NO, and this was one of those times.

Even though many of us, moi included, are completely aware of the fact God sees the infinite beginning and the infinite end of all time and space, and put in place a perfect plan for all of that infinite real estate, which may include a miserable windy day in New Mexico that may be necessary so that somewhere in the world a starving fisherman can have wind in his sails, so he can go out to sea and catch fish to feed his family, we forget that fact and make it all about us.

God has answered so many miraculous prayers along the trek that has led to me even getting my new home in the first place, that I am humbled and reminded that just because I call Him for something as trivial as a wind storm, in this case, that he is not going to interrupt his master plan for such an occasion, drop everything he is doing and still it for the perceived epicenter of the universe, me.

God truly has a perfect plan and his ways are not my ways (Isaiah 55:8) and I need to be still and know that he is God (Psalm 46:10).
