Refuge From Death

Psalm 73:25-28
25 Whom have I in heaven but you?
And earth has nothing I desire besides you.
26 My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart
and my portion forever.
27 Those who are far from you will perish;
you destroy all who are unfaithful to you.
28 But as for me, it is good to be near God.
I have made the Sovereign Lord my refuge;
I will tell of all your deeds.

As of 2012 the average lifespan of humans in the United States was 78.74 years (source: United States Census Bureau http://1.usa.gov/1vLE5gL).

That seems a fair longevity until you consider things in God’s time;

2 Peter 3:8 (NIV)
8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.

We scurry about our busy lives here on planet earth constantly reminded that our human hearts will fail and death will descend upon us as we witness the world surrounding our pinpoint and experience the more immediate and personal loss of friends and loved ones when their times come to leave this realm.

I have written about this before; those of us who are true believers in the salvation offered by Jesus Christ, know this earthly life is but temporary and our place in the timelessness of eternity in Heaven is assured when we pass.

But other things fail, as is common to mankind during our life on earth trek, most notably the desires of our flesh or “fleshly desires” and temptations that can be a degradation both to body and soul. Drugs, alcohol, illicit sex, greed or vengeance are just some of these desires, temptations or emotions that can consume us and eat up our earthly time.

In the average human lifetime of 78.74 years much can happen to affect our lives in a negative way both physically and spiritually but it is far to short, and too often individuals fall short, of the chance for eternity because that minuscule time span vanishes before we know it. We blink and life is gone and we are faced with where we will spend eternity in God’s infinite space where time does not exist; be it in Heaven or in Hell.

As believers, from the standpoint of eternity, earth really doesn’t have anything we desire, save for Jesus Christ who is also our representative in Heaven (v25) because 78.74 years is but a vapor compared to the prize of eternal, timeless living with Him in Heaven.

Our time here may have a limit where our physical hearts and spiritual challenges of the flesh will fail us but God is our strength and portion that will carry us into forever (v26) if we believe and trust in Him.

If you are a non believer you don’t have that much time to find eternity in Heaven and avoid it in Hell, trust me (v27). The saying “life is short” is glaringly clear in this case!

Believers, on the other hand, have accepted the gift of eternal life freely given by Jesus Christ when He died on the cross for the failures of all mankind. As a result we abide and are always near God. God is our refuge from the fear of death from a failed physical heart or from negative temptations to our fleshly desires. But believers have an obligation as a result of their salvation to tell of all the good deeds God has done for them to others so they may know and accept the same gift (v28).

So what will you do with your allotted time on earth? Will you squander it by living in the flesh or will you seek out the eternal Kingdom of God?

God gave us free will for a reason and that reason is so that we have the opportunity to freely choose His gift of eternal life or we can freely choose to reject it and spend eternity in Hell.

God’s gift of free choice assures Him that by freely accepting it we have done so with our eyes wide open and from our spiritual selves, not from some pretense based on force.

Your refuge from death is forever with God.
